Perspecta has an immediate need for a Geospatial Statistician in Atlanta, GA

The Geospatial Statistician will be required to

(1) provide mid-level geospatial statistical support in applicable public health disciplines (environmental health, emergency preparedness/ response, chronic disease, infectious disease, injury) using software tools along with U.S. Census and other Agency collected demographic data, health outcome data, and contaminant data to

(2) Map environmental, socio-economic, demographic, and health outcome data;

(3) Develop methods and models for assessing exposures and determining diffusion of contaminants;

(4) Conduct applied research using local, state, and national databases;

(5) Analyze relationships among geographic features; characterize cases, affected populations, and contamination;

(6) Visualize the spatial aspect of public health issues;

(7) Act as a liaison between scientists and program to design statistical methodologies that reveal spatial and temporal relationships between diseases and environmental factors;

(8) Identify potentially susceptible populations that may live in the vicinity of hazardous waste sites and emergency events involving the release of chemicals to assess the potential for exposure to toxic substances and mitigate adverse health outcomes related to those exposures;

(9) Assist with epidemiological and medical geography consultations, exposure assessments, and 2D/3D contaminant modeling;

(10) Determine the most suitable sampling collection methodologies for planned field operations;

(11) Participate in oral and written communications, as needed, to interface with the diverse and multi-disciplinary program staff to obtain clarity in requirements and communicate complex GIS science and technology concepts to program staff and customer staff who collaborate with program on various projects.


Qualifications Required:

Experience using statistical methods to examine trends and patterns in health outcomes, risk, and vulnerability to better understand the context of infectious and chronic diseases and environmental exposures; organizing multi-variate datasets into easily consumable indices; providing reports, charts, and graphs to communicate complex concepts to audiences of all types.

Experience preferred using software for advanced geospatial analysis to perform cluster analysis, regression analysis, sampling design, local, and global measures of spatial association, and geographically weighted regression.

Experience supporting interdisciplinary teams to develop study questions that examine the geographic and temporal variations in disease, and the linkage between environmental exposures and health, and risk factors and health.

Experience preferred with ArcGIS suite of GIS products and extensions, and statistical software including but not limited to SAS, SPSS, SaTScan, Statistica, GeoDa, and R.

Ability to work independently or as a part of a team to provide geospatial statistical support.

The ability to explain technical concepts and applications to non-GIS project partners.

Willingness to learn and adapt to rapidly evolving geospatial technologies.

Excellent oral and written communication skills are a must.

Qualifications Preferred:

5+ years (or 3+ years with an advanced degree) of experience identifying statistical approaches to best examine problems associated with environmental sampling and exposure, epidemiology, and health program planning and evaluation.

Experience quantifying the structure and distribution of spatially referenced data using geostatistical analyses.

Knowledge of geospatial surface interpolation approaches such as kriging and inverse distance weighting (IDW).

Experience supporting CDC/ATSDR or any Public Health Agency is highly desired.


BS/BA in Public Health, Math, Statistics, Computer Science, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), or related field.
